1. Why am I running for the Utah House of Representatives?
To make a difference. I am running to remember the tax payer; bring attention to government accountability and improved efficiency; to support parents in their responsibilities to educate and raise their children. I want to see the world come to our state with their businesses and to hire our children as their employees. We have strong family values, smart kids and emphasize to our children—education, education, education. I see no reason why our children shouldn’t be leading the world in educational achievement.
2. What are the most important issues facing voters in our district?
Education, Transportation & Government Fiscal Responsibility.
Citizens are concerned with transportation. Finally, we are about to get underway with many road projects that will make travel more difficult for a couple of years to come but will be wonderful when completed. Redwood Road, 10th South, 21st North, SR-92, State Street, Geneva Road, Lindon Connector and I-15 will all be widen or built during the next 5 years with Redwood Road and 10th under-construction by the end of the summer.
Education is always important and with tremendous growth, not only in our area but throughout the state, how will we pay for all the new buildings and teachers that will be necessary? We have to think outside the box. Vouchers was one financial option that were defeated by the referendum. The other options are a major tax increase or to move to year-round schools. This will better utilize expensive buildings and will help reduce the teacher shortage while increasing their pay--all without a tax increase. As citizens we will have to decide what is most important to us--the timing of the current summer vacation or tax increases. If we do nothing, the WPU (Weighted per pupil unit) will decrease, i.e., funding per child will actually decrease. The reason is during the next 10 years an additional 150,000 students will be added to a current population of about 550,000 students (April 08).
3. What legislative experience do you have?
I have just completed my first term as a state representative. I currently serve on the Transportation Appropriations, Education and Law Enforcement committees. I previously served on the Health and Human Services Appropriations committee. I have spent hundreds of hours working on many different issues ranging from the School of the Deaf and Blind to an appropriation for a Utah Lake Road Crossing--which I successfully obtained (April 08).
4. What makes you different from other candidates, or why should I vote for you?
As a CPA with years of experience working in private business I will bring a focus to government accountability. I ran a school disclosure bill and held it upon the District Business Managers Association's agreement to voluntarily place the information requested in the bill on their district web-sites. We cannot continue to spend tax payers' money at a faster rate than the economic growth of our state. I supported and whole-heartedly voted for the $200 million tax cut passed during the 2007 Legislative Session. During surplus years taxes must be reduced to bring balance between economic growth & government spending--if not then, when?
Second, I will always support legislation that will strength the educational choices of parents. Parents should have the choice of where and how their children are educated. Parents in my district want to be involved in their children's education but do not always feel so empowered to do so (April 08).
